What Children’s Dentistry is?

Pediatric dentistry deals with children’s oral health from infancy until the teenage years. The pediatric dentist, also known as periodontist, has the experience and qualifications needed to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood. Pediatric dentists know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable so that they may enjoy a positive dental experience, and receive the proper dental health care they need to grow into healthy young adults.

Dr. Cassini is a specialist pediatric dentist who brings to Bistolfi’s Dental Clinic over 30 years of experience. Thanks to the use of special techniques and tricks she can make children feel comfortable and less worried during the procedure by establishing a relationship of trust with them over the years.

Pediatric dental care ensures your child’s primary teeth stay healthy and free of decay and other dental diseases by introducing children to a proper routine, dental cleanings, giving them good oral hygiene instructions for their growth.

Moreover, the periodontist can monitor, fix and prevent development anomalies of teeth and jawbones, that can cause malocclusions, traumas, and other orthodontic issues.

Dental Sealants

We highly recommend the treatment of children’s permanent molar teeth with the use dental sealants to prevent the onset of tooth decays and cavities. An ideal time to treat children with dental sealants is when their permanent teeth develop, at around six years of age. The sealant protects the teeth from food debris and plaque build-up that can stay trapped.

CAUTION: Unsealed teeth are at higher risk of tooth decay and cavity development because of grooves that are not easily accessed during oral hygiene. Bacteria buildup may occur and cause infection, which may later need more extensive dental treatment such as dental fillings, root canal treatment or crowns.

The sealant is a colourless fluid that is gently brushed onto the tooth surface, after which it is dried with an ultraviolet curing light. Considering that incorrectly done sealants can be extremely harmful, in our clinic we provide full attention during treatments, using the best material  in the world’s market: ‘LTRASEAL XT PLUS+ TM’ made with fluorine.

Furthermore, we monitor the sealants for the next 24 months free of cost, to ensure the follow up.

Flouride Tratments

Fluoride is a natural substance that helps strengthen teeth and prevent decay for patients of all ages.

It is found in water sources, certain foods (e.g. meat, fish, and eggs), and in toothpaste, oral rinses, and professional treatments.

  • Sufficient fluoride treatment for kids are important during childhood years to ensure extra protection against cavities in developing teeth, by making the outer surface of your teeth (enamel) more resistant to the acid attacks that cause tooth decay.

  • Fluoride treatments are 100% safe for children and are highly recommended for kids of all ages. It prevents cavities and tooth decay and will keep your children’s teeth healthy.

Your children’s teeth.

The first teeth begin to break through the gums at about 6-10 months of age. Usually, the first two teeth to erupt are the two bottom central incisors (the two bottom front teeth). Next, the top four front teeth emerge. After that, other teeth slowly begin to fill in, usually in pairs — one each side of the upper or lower jaw — until all 20 teeth (10 in the upper jaw and 10 in the lower jaw) have come in by the time the child is 2 ½ to 3 years old. The complete set of primary teeth is in the mouth rom the age of 2 ½ to 3 years of age to 6 to 7 years of age. As children start losing their teeth, many parents worry about how and when the adult teeth will come in. There are many reasons why children will not get their adult teeth, but generally it does not represent a problem.

If more than one or two adult teeth are missing, this becomes an issue with the teeth’s function and maintenance: if a child is missing multiple adult teeth, a consultation with the child’s dentist is recommended.

With proper dental care, your kids’ permanent teeth will last for the rest of their lives. Encouraging great dental habits reduces their risk of tooth decay. Similarly, dental treatments such as sealants and fluoride gels can further strengthen the teeth and protect against decay.

Having the permanent teeth come in a is major milestone in your child’s life. Monitoring them and get regular dentist consultations.
